Top 5 Albums of 2009 - #2

Girls
Album

Its always hard when a band just about lives up to their hype. This album will undoubtedly be met with a backlash, but be weary of counter-hype hype - this is actually a great record. I must admit, a lot of my initial excitement for this album came with my viewing of the "Lust For Life" video (proof that the music video is not dead, and that we need more video based programming desperately) which manages to match the song's blissful daydreams of a simply perfect life. That song starts off Album on a short and sweet journey through influence worship. Costello, Beach Boys, Sonic Youth, Bacharach, My Bloody Valentine, and that's just on "Hellhole Ratrace". This album has summer love written all over it, more so than any other album since Since I Left You (2000). "Summertime" is an obvious point, but in more subtle ways, often shown in the production. "Big Bad Mean Motherfucker" is baked over in distorted heat while "Headache" is a hazy lay on a fireside blanket. The songs all reek of mowed grass, hamburger grills, fireworks, and seaweed, not to mention spilled beer and lingering marijuana smoke on a beach at dusk. The only shame about this record is its release in September...its full potential awaits upon next June.
